Attic
The attic is our house's thermal weak spot.
It's poorly insulated (only 4 inches of blown fiberglass).
All the wiring in the upstairs used to be knob & tube, and was laid directly over the joists. In order to blow the insulation in, they laid cheap particle board flooring down, sandwiching the K&T between the flooring and joists. Insulating around knob & tube with blown insulation is a HUGE fire hazard, especially with the wiring being brutally crushed by the flooring. I'm truly in awe this place didn't burn down years ago.
Anyway, the K&T is all disconnected now and I can sleep a bit better for that. There's still much to do though in that dark, itchy space under the roof. More insulation would be a huge benefit, but we'll need to take the flooring up and run some more lumber perpendicular to the existing joists. It wouldn't be a bad idea to remove the existing insulation and put a vapor barrier in either.
It's kinda tragic, really. So much work to do up there, so little time in which to do it!
